Toll row in Sri Ganganagar: Congress MLA detained, later released

In Sri Ganganagar, the administration has placed Congress MLA Roopinder Singh Kunnar from Shri Karanpur under house arrest. He is present at his house located at 25 BB, and a heavy police contingent has been deployed outside the house.

The protest by people against toll collection on the Sri Ganganagar-Padampur state highway has been going on for the past 42 days. On Monday, MLA Kunnar, along with his supporters, reached the 18 BB toll plaza and staged a sit-in, after which there was a scuffle between the MLA and the police. Late at night, the police had taken Kunnar and his supporters into custody, but they were released after some time.

Meanwhile, this morning, the administration restarted the toll citing the orders of the High Court. A heavy police contingent has been deployed at the toll plaza.

MLA Rupinder Singh Kunnar has appealed to his supporters to come to his house at 25 BB on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock. A large number of farmers, Congress workers, and local people have started gathering. Additionally, today there is also a program to celebrate Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti, which can be connected with this movement to give it more strength.

Congress leaders have called this action ‘dictatorial’ and said that there is an attempt to suppress the demand to stop illegal toll collection. Meanwhile, the administration says that toll collection is continuing in compliance with the High Court’s orders and that this step has been taken to maintain law and order.
