Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s Name Etched on Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace Wall; Outrage Among Tourists

Bengaluru: A shocking act of vandalism came to light on Monday after miscreants etched the name of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi on the wall of Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, a protected heritage monument located atop Nandi Hills on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Officials suspect that the engraving was done using a stone or other hard object, despite the presence of multiple CCTV cameras installed around the site, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archaeology.

The words “Lawrence Bishnoi” were found etched prominently on the front façade of the structure, once the summer retreat of the 18th-century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan.

Visitors Express Outrage

Tourists and locals visiting the palace expressed strong disapproval over the defacement.

“We had come to visit Nandi Hills and see Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, but we were shocked to see the name of a gangster like Lawrence Bishnoi here,” said Mohammad Abdulla, a visitor.
“There is only one signboard at the main entry identifying this building. Authorities should install proper signage and take strict action against those responsible.”

Another tourist, Mahantesh, urged the Archaeology Department to step up security:

“Such acts should never happen at historic sites. Officials must preserve the monument and punish those involved.”

Bishnoi Gang’s Transnational Links

Lawrence Bishnoi, originally from Punjab, leads a transnational organised crime syndicate involved in murders, extortion, arms smuggling and drug trafficking.

In September 2025, Canada designated the Bishnoi gang a terrorist entity, citing its role in targeted killings and threats to Indian diaspora communities. The gang has also been linked to terror plots in Delhi and Gwalior ahead of Independence Day.

Historical Significance of the Palace

Tipu Sultan (1751–1799), also known as the “Tiger of Mysore”, succeeded his father Hyder Ali in 1782 and ruled the Kingdom of Mysore until his death in 1799.

He is remembered for his military innovation, administrative reforms, and resistance against British colonial expansion. The Nandi Hills summer palace served as his retreat during the warmer months.
