In Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, two groups exchanged fire indiscriminately last night. The attackers came in vehicles and opened fire near a railway crossing in Kairon village, killing a 19-year-old youth and leaving another in critical condition.
The incident is being seen as a gang-related incident. Social media influencers have also been named. The Gopi Ghanshampuria gang has claimed responsibility for the incident by posting a viral post on social media. It says that they used to run a podcast with the support of the DSP.
The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Samarpreet Singh of Karmuwala village. The injured is a resident of Marhana village. Both are said to be close to rapper and social media influencer Jas Dhaliwal.
8-10 rounds fired from both sides
According to reports, a clash broke out between two groups near the railway crossing near Kairon village around 5 pm on Monday. Shots were fired from both sides, and about 8 to 10 rounds were fired. Two youths travelling in a Fortuner car were seriously injured during the incident.
They were taken to a private hospital in Tarn Taran, where Samarpreet Singh died. Saurabh Singh’s condition is said to be critical. After the incident, the attackers fled towards Patti in their vehicles.
Social media controversy-related case
After the incident, SP Riputpan Singh, DSP Lavkesh Saini, Patti Police Station In-charge Kanwaljit Rai, City Police Station In-charge Gurcharan Singh, Sadar Police Station In-charge Avtar Singh Sandhu and Chief of Staff Prabhjit Singh inspected the scene. According to police sources and local residents, the incident is linked to an ongoing social media controversy.
It is being told that Mehak Pandori, a social media influencer from Pandori village, had recently shared a video of rapper Jas Dhaliwal. Following this, Mehak’s house was attacked, and she was beaten up, a video of which went viral on social media. Tensions increased between the two sides over the dispute. The deceased youth is said to be a close associate of Jas Dhaliwal.
Responsibility on social media
After the firing, some youths active on social media – Samar, Dolly Bal and Prabh Dasuwal – claimed responsibility for the murder. The police are also investigating whether the gang war was entirely born out of the enmity fuelled by social media.
