Gaurav Gogoi, Congress Leaders Detained During Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Guwahati: Assam Congress chief and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi was among several party leaders detained by police on Friday during a demonstration demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest was organised as part of the Congress’s nationwide agitation over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The party has raised allegations of irregularities in the electoral roll revision process and has called for action against the CEC.

Congress Workers Attempt March to CEO Office

The Assam Congress had planned a march from its state headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, towards the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. Police deployed barricades along the route to stop the protesters.

Gogoi and other party leaders were taken into custody after they attempted to move past the barricades. Among those detained were AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan, Seva Dal president Deep Bayan and APCC general secretary Udit Bhanu Das.

Congress Raises Questions Over SIR

During the demonstration, Gogoi reiterated the Congress demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and alleged that the Election Commission had committed irregularities while carrying out the SIR exercise.

Congress spokesperson Bedabrat Bora also criticised the police action, alleging that the protesters were forcibly detained. The allegations made by Congress leaders have not been independently established.

Nationwide Agitation Over Electoral Roll Revision

Congress protests were also reported in several other states as the party stepped up its campaign against the SIR process.

The demonstrations reflect the ongoing political disagreement between the Congress and the Election Commission over the electoral roll revision exercise. The poll panel has maintained that decisions concerning SIR were taken unanimously by the Commission.
