Kathmandu, November 20: Protests have flared up again in Nepal after clashes broke out between youths associated with the Gen-Z movement and CPN-UML activists supporting the former prime minister. According to an order from the District Administration Office, Bara, the curfew will remain in effect till 8 pm tonight.
Clashes and curfew in Bara district
According to officials, both youth protesters associated with the Gen-Z movement and CPN-UML activists held rallies in Simara area of Bara district on Wednesday. Clashes broke out between the two groups shortly after. As the situation spiralled out of control, the administration imposed curfew and banned all public gatherings.
Why did the Gen-Z protests flare up again?
The protests come months after the Gen-Z movement began last September. About 76 people were killed in the September 2025 protests. The new protests are being led by the government’s short-term ban on social media. Loosely organised youth groups within Gen-Z are leading the protests.
PM appeals for peace
Nepalese Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appealed to all parties to maintain peace. She asked all political parties to avoid “unnecessary political provocations” and to trust in the democratic process until the elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. As prime minister, she took charge of an interim government after the September protests.
