It is often said that the younger generation around the world is becoming inactive. They are not bringing about the kind of change they should. However, when we look at the emerging power of the younger generation in today’s world, we realize that Gen Z is the force that holds the greatest potential to transform countries, from power to policy. Gen Z, referring to young people born between 1997 and 2012, seeks to break down the walls of the status quo. Gen Z’s first vocal protests took place in Mexico, then Sri Lanka, and then Nepal.
Millions of young people took to the streets against corruption and unemployment. They attempted to overthrow long-established power structures and were mostly successful. The political landscape and the dominance of monopolies in neighboring countries have not brought about revolutionary change in these countries, but when the younger generation came into its own, it transformed the system. When we turn to India, we find that the 380 millionstrong generation born in this era doesn’t want to follow their parents’ traditional perspectives.
They don’t like using their grandparents’ favorite soap or old cars. This generation creates new meaning for itself. In India, this Gen Z has also impacted the economy. This 380 million-strong generation influences half of the country’s total purchases. By 2035, this generation’s spending will reach Rs 1.66 lakh crore. But their boldness and decisions are clear. AI-based recommendations, rolls, and mom campaigns influence Gen Z. This is a generation living in the era of “instant podhi 10-minute delivery.” 90 percent of Gen Z use UPI. When shopping, 70 percent of young people open brands online first and prefer to visit the store later.
If companies and brands do not meet their expectations, Gen Z stops buying from them. Community marketing often uses small influencers. According to Forbes, this generation prefers brands that match their values. Gen Z is aware of social issues, the environment, and technology. For them, traditional occupations are less appealing, prompting companies to adapt as market dynamics shift. Due to Gen Z, all markets have become global. Gen Z has shut down traditional trading platforms, while new platforms have begun to emerge. Online trading has become increasingly popular.
Now, even rural youth are no longer confined to traditional confines but are seeking to embrace the world in every new way. Gen Z’s embrace of convenience and technology is rewriting how markets operate. By driving demand for home delivery and digital-first services, this tech-savvy generation is directly shaping business models and economic trends. The rising influence and expectations of young consumers will increasingly set the agenda for the future market landscape.
