“Denial of Justice in Sacrilege Cases Has Broken Sikh Community’s Trust” Warns Giani Harpreet Singh

Punjab: Former acting jathedar of the Akal Takht and President of Shiromani Akali Dal formed by a rebel faction Singh Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh, has strongly condemned the repeated failure of the system to deliver justice in cases of sacrilege, particularly referencing the 2015 incidents.

In a statement shared on social media, he expressed deep concern over the growing public anger and loss of faith in the judicial process and the government.

He said that when the system shies away from delivering justice, it inevitably leads to a breakdown of public trust—not just in the government but in the entire legal and judicial process.

Reaction in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kolpur Village

Referring to the recent incident in the village of Kolpur, in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, Giani Harpreet Singh said that the Sikh community’s reaction was a direct consequence of the longstanding betrayal and inaction on the part of the authorities.

In this incident, local residents, outraged by the alleged sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, demolished the house of the accused, Manjeet. The police have arrested the accused, but Giani Harpreet Singh pointed out that the root cause of the issue remains unaddressed.

Governments Accused of Shielding the Guilty

He stressed that despite all available evidence and investigative reports since 2015, successive governments have openly protected the guilty in sacrilege cases.

This, he said, has naturally led to a sense of betrayal, anger, and mistrust among the Sikh community. The Jathedar highlighted that the people’s patience is not limitless and warned that the continuing denial of justice is nothing short of a blatant betrayal.

A Warning of Growing Outrage

Giani Harpreet Singh emphasized that the growing outrage witnessed across Punjab and beyond, including the recent unrest in Kolpur, is a direct warning that the community will no longer tolerate delay and injustice.

Call for Exemplary Punishment

According to him, exemplary punishment is now the only acceptable form of justice. Giani Harpreet Singh called on the government to understand that the Sikh community’s endurance has its limits, and when justice is consistently denied in the face of clear evidence and findings, it only fuels resentment and unrest.

He concluded by stating that the anger expressed by the Sangat (the Sikh congregation) must be taken as a serious warning—only swift and decisive action, resulting in meaningful and exemplary punishment, can restore trust and deliver true justice in cases of sacrilege.
