In a move towards making Punjab the country’s leading sports state, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann inaugurated a modern, Olympic-standard swimming pool at the War Heroes Stadium in Sangrur, constructed at a cost of ₹9.50 crore. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister stated that Sangrur would emerge as a nursery for Asian, World, and Olympic-level athletes in the future, and this project would elevate the state’s sports culture to new heights.

Historic Hike in Sports Budget

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann noted that during the tenures of previous governments, Punjab’s sports budget never exceeded ₹200 crore, whereas the current government has raised it to ₹1,790 crore. He stated that the government is continuously investing to provide world-class facilities for sporting talent, enabling the state’s athletes to excel in international competitions.

Punjab to Host Asian Hockey Championship

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced that, for the first time, Punjab has secured the opportunity to host the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy. Additionally, the state government will soon launch the Punjab Premier League and the Punjab Hockey League. He mentioned that the Asian Champions Trophy (Hockey) would be organized in Mohali and Jalandhar during October-November, further strengthening Punjab’s identity as a major sports hub.

Sharing a video of the event on the social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann wrote that the modern 50×21 meter swimming pool at War Heroes Stadium is equipped with world-class facilities for athletes and coaches. He stated that training here would meet international standards and prove to be a significant milestone for young athletes.

Attractive Cash Prizes for Medal Winners

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced that advance financial assistance would be provided to athletes for their training. Additionally, athletes winning medals in international competitions will be awarded cash prizes: ₹1 crore for gold, ₹75 lakh for silver, and ₹50 lakh for bronze.

New swimming pool equipped with world-class facilities

Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, the Chief Minister stated that this swimming pool would not merely be a sports complex but a hub for grooming future Olympians. He noted that the pool, measuring 50 meters in length and 21 meters in width, has been constructed in accordance with Olympic standards. It has a depth ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 feet and a water capacity of approximately 2.5 lakh liters.

Modern amenities for athletes

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann mentioned that the complex features separate changing rooms for male and female athletes, modern showers, dedicated rooms for coaches, a store room, and a state-of-the-art gymnasium. Furthermore, a separate mini-swimming pool has been constructed for children under the age of seven, enabling them to receive swimming training from an early age.

He explained that the project utilizes world-class ‘Mirtha Renovation’ and ‘Classic Modular System’ technologies. The pool incorporates laminated PVC and stainless steel panels, while a filtration and disinfection system compliant with European standards has been installed to maintain water quality.

3,100 sports grounds being developed across Punjab

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that the state government is developing 3,100 new sports grounds across Punjab to provide better sports facilities to the youth in both rural and urban areas. He reiterated the government’s goal of establishing a new identity for Punjab in the realm of sports at both national and international levels.
