New Delhi: Australia’s explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday, ending his international career spanning more than a decade across all three formats.
According to an ESPNcricinfo report, Maxwell played a total of 286 international matches for Australia, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. Known as “The Big Show,” the 38-year-old Maxwell was a key part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup-winning teams, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup-winning team.
Made his international debut in 2012
Maxwell made his international debut in an ODI against Afghanistan in 2012. He subsequently became known for his aggressive batting, unique shots, and big-hitting ability. He was a batsman capable of turning the tide of a match in no time.
Maxwell also has an impressive record in T20 International cricket. He has five T20 centuries to his name, and he is the joint-highest scorer in this format with India’s Rohit Sharma.
Memorable innings against Afghanistan in the World Cup
One of the most memorable innings of Maxwell’s career is his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup. In this match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he scored a double century off 128 balls, leading Australia to a three-wicket victory.
During this innings, Maxwell suffered from muscle cramps and had difficulty running. Despite this, he remained on the field and performed exceptionally well. At one point, Australia’s score was 91 for seven, and the team looked close to defeat. In such difficult circumstances, Maxwell’s innings led the team to victory.
Had already retired from Test and ODI cricket
Maxwell played his last Test match in 2017. He played a total of seven Test matches for Australia. After that, he focused primarily on limited-overs cricket, where his performances were more impressive.
He also announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the 2025 Champions Trophy. He scored 3,990 runs in the ODI format. His last T20 International was against Oman in February this year.
With Maxwell’s retirement, Australia has lost one of its most influential players in limited-overs cricket. In addition to his aggressive batting, he will be remembered for his useful off-spin bowling and excellent fielding.
