Haryana Rajya Sabha Poll: Gopal Kanda’s Possible Independent Bid

With the final nomination deadline approaching for the Haryana Rajya Sabha election, political circles are abuzz about the possibility of Gopal Kanda entering the contest as an independent candidate. The buzz comes days ahead of the March 5 deadline to file nominations for the two seats from the state.

Kanda, a former Minister of State in the Haryana government and once aligned with the Congress, has in recent years moved closer to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

Electoral Numbers: BJP and Congress Stakes

In the current Haryana Assembly, the BJP holds 48 MLAs and the Congress holds 37. A candidate needs 31 first-preference votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat. Based on these numbers, both BJP and Congress are in positions to secure one seat each of the two available assuming no political surprises.

However, Kanda’s potential independent run has triggered strategic calculations within party ranks, especially in Congress. Leaders in the party are wary that a third candidate might affect vote transfers and alter the arithmetic.

    Political Calculus: Why Kanda Matters

    • Gopal Kanda has a track record of political maneuvering in Haryana, having previously served as a minister and maintained a presence in state politics.

    • His entry as an independent could attract attention if backed informally by sections of the BJP a move that Congress fears could confuse preferences and impact outcomes.

    • The last date for finalizing candidates is March 5, and if necessary, polling will be held on March 16.

    Seats and Context

The two Rajya Sabha seats are being vacated as terms end for sitting BJP members Ram Chander Jangra and Kiran Choudhry. Parties have yet to officially announce their nominees and are completing internal selections ahead of the nomination deadline.
