Inspection of Fish Pond and Review of Ongoing Activities

During his visit, Dr. Likhi inspected the fish pond of Ahneer Kaur in village Jaitowali (Jandu Singha) and assessed the ongoing activities there. Progressive fish farmers from Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, and SBS Nagar districts were also present.

The Secretary evaluated the work being done under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and spoke directly with fish farmers to understand their challenges and suggestions. He appreciated the efforts of the Fisheries Department in promoting aquaculture across Punjab.

Encouraging Fish Farming as a Supplementary Income Source

Dr. Likhi urged farmers to adopt fish farming alongside traditional agriculture to enhance their income. Karamjit Singh, Director and Warden of the Fisheries Department, Punjab, highlighted that subsidies totaling ₹35.34 crore have been disbursed to 767 farmers under various schemes in the state so far. A beneficiary from Jaitowali received 60 percent of the subsidy, amounting to over ₹3.14 lakh, under the women’s category.

Innovative Initiatives and Beneficiary Support

The visit also showcased initiatives like solar energy systems and duck farming. Dr. Likhi met with Jatinder Kumar of Jalandhar, who received Rs. 7.71 lakh for the purchase of an insulated vehicle under the scheme. Other senior department officials accompanied the Secretary during the visit.

This visit highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen fisheries as a viable livelihood option in Punjab while promoting sustainable practices.
