Government asked to respond in MP Harbhajan Security Case; High Court Grants three weeks

The security matter of BJP Rajya Sabha MP and cricketer Harbhajan Singh was heard today in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The state government requested three weeks to file a response in the matter, which the court accepted. The court ordered the response to be filed next Wednesday.

During the hearing, the court asked the Punjab government which officials and individuals are being provided security by the Punjab Police and what criteria have been set for providing security within and outside the state. It ordered the submission of a full response in this regard.

What’s the matter? 

In April of this year, Harbhajan Singh left the Aam Aadmi Party and subsequently joined the BJP. Following this, the Punjab government withdrew his security. The approximately 10 police officers deployed outside his house were recalled. Following the withdrawal of security, an angry mob protested outside his house in Jalandhar, painting “traitor” on the walls.

Immediately after the Punjab Police security was withdrawn, the central government intervened and provided him with CRPF commando protection. Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the withdrawal of security.

The court took a firm stance and directed the Punjab government to ensure the safety of Harbhajan and his family until the next hearing, and to ensure that no physical harm comes to them. Even during the hearing today, a response was sought.
