‘Historic moment for Assam’: PM Modi praises Namrup urea plant

New Delhi: Political leaders and common people from Assam and the Northeast on Sunday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited (AVFCL)’s new urea plant in Namrup, Assam. It is being seen as the realization of a long-cherished dream for the state and the entire Northeast.

This ammonia-urea fertiliser plant, to be built at a cost of ₹11,000 crore in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, is considered a significant step towards industrial development, employment generation, and the empowerment of farmers.

Assam’s long-standing dream has come true

Reacting to the development, youth leader Parag Dutta said the project fulfills a long-standing demand of the people of Assam.

He said, “This is a proud moment for us. The long-standing dream of the people of Assam and the entire Northeast is now coming true. This project will create new employment opportunities and bring immense benefits to the region.”

Agriculture and industry will be strengthened

Assam Minister Prasanta Phukan described the project as a major achievement for the state, calling it “the biggest gift to Assam.”

He said the urea plant will strengthen the state’s industrial base and ensure better availability of fertilizers to farmers.

BJP MLA Taranga Gogoi also welcomed the groundbreaking ceremony, saying the demand for strengthening fertilizer production in Namrup had been a long-standing one.

He said, “This project will open new avenues for development and employment and demonstrates the central government’s commitment to Assam.”

Game changer for the Northeast

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Punkan Barua said that this demand had been raised repeatedly by the public and had now been fulfilled.

He said, “Whenever there was a public outreach in Assam, this demand came up prominently. The government has fulfilled the public’s expectations.”

Locals and ordinary citizens also expressed joy over the announcement. They said that the project would create employment opportunities for youth, boost the local economy, and revitalize industrial activity in Upper Assam.

Many people called the Namrup urea plant a “game changer” not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast.
