Guinea: 30 Killed After Landslide Hits Conakry Waste Dump

Conakry: Part of a large garbage dumping site collapsed in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, following heavy rain. At least 30 people were killed in the accident, while 22 others were injured. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday, when the debris swept away nearby tents and makeshift homes.

Garbage heap collapses suddenly after rain

The accident occurred in the Gbesia commune. Continuous heavy rain caused a large garbage heap to collapse, burying the surrounding area under the debris. According to locals, the landslide was so massive that it also engulfed an apartment building and several nearby makeshift homes.

22 injured, 6 critically

According to the government, of the 22 injured in the accident, 6 are in critical condition, while 16 others suffered minor injuries. Rescue teams are using excavators and other equipment to remove debris.

Closure Plan Made Just Days Ago

This accident comes days after authorities announced plans to close the landfill and relocate the waste due to safety concerns. It was feared the danger would increase during the rainy season.

PM Visits Site

Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site on Sunday to assess the damage and monitor rescue operations. The government has appealed to people to remain calm, cooperate with each other, and follow the instructions of rescue teams and authorities.

Local resident Sire Diallo said all five of his children died in the accident. He said he lost all of them and now has only God to rely on.
