Gujarat Contributes Nearly 18% of India’s Renewable Energy Capacity, Leads in Wind and Rooftop Solar

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has emerged as India’s leading renewable energy state, contributing 17.82 per cent of the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity with a cumulative capacity of 50.386 GW, according to figures released by the state government ahead of Global Energy Independence Day on July 10.

The achievement comes as India works towards its target of meeting 50 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Gujarat tops wind energy, ranks second in solar

According to the state government, Gujarat has the highest installed wind power capacity in the country at 15,850.56 MW and ranks second in solar power capacity with 32,302.7 MW.

The state also leads India in rooftop solar, with over 13 lakh installations generating 7,408.10 MW. Gujarat accounts for more than 21 per cent of all rooftop solar installations nationwide.

Among its major solar parks are Charanka (749 MW), Radhanesda (700 MW) and Dholera (300 MW). The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, planned with a capacity of 37.35 GW, is described by the government as the world’s largest green energy project, with 15.54 GW already commissioned.

Policies drive renewable growth

The government said Gujarat’s renewable energy expansion has been supported by policy initiatives introduced over the past three decades, beginning with India’s first Wind Power Policy in 1993, followed by successive solar, hybrid and integrated renewable energy policies.

The Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025 aims to simplify grid connectivity, promote battery storage, encourage renewable energy manufacturing, support rooftop and agricultural solar projects, and strengthen green skills development.

State targets 105 GW by 2030

As of May, Gujarat had 1,531 renewable energy projects under implementation, including 1,320 solar, 115 wind, and 96 hybrid projects.

The state has set an ambitious target of achieving 105 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, which would contribute around one-fifth of India’s goal of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by the end of the decade.

The government estimates that the rapid growth of the renewable energy sector has already generated approximately 2.37 lakh direct and indirect jobs across Gujarat.
