India-bound Travellers Rerouted as Gulf Airspace Restrictions Bite

India-bound passengers flying from key Gulf hubs like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are facing major rerouting and travel uncertainties due to persistent airspace restrictions in the Persian Gulf region triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions. These restrictions have led to closures and partial suspensions of commercial flight operations at major airports, forcing airlines to reroute flights, cancel services, or reschedule travel plans for thousands of travellers heading back to India.

The evolving situation, linked to military strikes and retaliatory actions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, has caused widespread airspace closures across the Middle East. This has particularly impacted the UAE’s airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah vital international transit points which operate as major gateways for passengers travelling between India and the world.

    Travelers Rerouted via Alternate Routes

According to interviews and reports, passengers returning from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi recounted how their original travel plans were disrupted. With many flights grounded or limited by ongoing airspace restrictions, several travellers had to reroute their journeys through alternate hubs such as Muscat to reach India. One passenger arriving from Dubai to Mumbai explained that flights took a detour via Muscat, significantly extending travel time and requiring careful coordination with airline representatives.

Another group of travelers noted that although flights were operating on a limited basis, airline operators prioritized booked passengers and those needing evacuation from the region, advising flexibility and patience due to rapidly evolving flight schedules.

    Airlines Respond with Limited Services

Major Gulf carriers including Emirates, Etihad, flydubai and Air Arabia have faced suspensions or major reductions in operations amid the airspace restrictions. In some cases, scheduled passenger flights were temporarily halted until further safety assessments, with airlines urging passengers not to travel to airports unless officially notified of confirmed departures.

Indian carriers also extended suspensions or cancellations of Middle East routes, working with limited operational alternatives where possible. Flights that did operate were often rerouted around restricted airspace, which added complexity and length to occupier flight paths.

Despite the challenges, limited flights from the UAE to India have begun to resume cautiously under controlled scheduling, providing some relief to stranded travellers. Partial services have been restored with priority given to passengers with confirmed bookings, while additional charter or special evacuation flights are being explored.

    Impact on Passengers and Airports

Flight disruptions have resulted in numerous cancellations at Indian airports as well as major Gulf hubs. Airports such as Chennai and Ahmedabad reported a surge in cancellations linking India with Gulf destinations like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha and Bahrain. Affected passengers were offered rebooking, refunds or assistance via help desks set up by airlines and airports.

Many travellers are also facing longer layovers, stretched travel times and higher costs for rerouted flights. Some had to adjust plans or secure temporary accommodations due to extended stays abroad or last-minute changes.

    Travel Advisory and Passenger Guidance

In light of continuing volatility, aviation authorities and airlines have issued strong advisories for passengers to check flight statuses regularly and avoid heading to airports without confirmed departures. Passengers are encouraged to stay in direct contact with their airlines, use official airline apps and communications for updates, and take advantage of rebooking or refund options offered without penalties for disrupted schedules.

Embassy advisories, emergency helplines and air travel support channels are also available for travellers affected by the crisis, aiming to facilitate coordination and assistance during the period of uncertainty.

Looking Ahead: Gradual Restoration of Services

While the situation remains fluid, indications of partial resumption of flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Gulf airports suggest a gradual return to normalcy if airspace conditions improve. Airlines are monitoring the evolving scenario to gradually restore connectivity while maintaining passenger safety as the overriding priority.
