Union Min. Hardeep Puri Seeks PM Modi’s Intervention for Preservation of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Sacred ‘Jore Sahib’

New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, along with a committee of eminent members of the Sikh community, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to submit a comprehensive report on the preservation and public display of the venerable ‘Jore Sahib’, a pair of sacred shoes believed to have belonged to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur Ji.

The ‘Jore Sahib’ – which includes the right foot shoes (11″ by 3.5″) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and the left foot shoes (9″ by 3″) of Mata Sahib Kaur Ji – have been in the possession of the Puri family for over three centuries. The family traces its lineage back to an ancestor who, according to tradition, received the sacred insignia directly from the Guru in recognition of his dedicated service (Sewa).

“This sacred heritage has been preserved by our family for generations. The last custodian was my late cousin, Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri Ji, who lived in Delhi’s Karol Bagh – on a street that was later renamed Guru Gobind Singh Marg in honour of the sanctity of these relics,” Puri said.

Minister Puri said that his late cousin’s wife, Manpreet Kaur, had entrusted him with the responsibility of finding a suitable, permanent home for the relics – where devotees could pay their respects in large numbers.

In view of this, the sacred shoes were handed over to the Ministry of Culture for a thorough examination, which included carbon testing to confirm their authenticity and historical value. A committee of religious scholars and community leaders was then formed to assess the best possible means of preserving and displaying the relics for public reverence.

The committee has now submitted its final recommendations to Prime Minister Modi, whose government has taken several important initiatives related to Sikh heritage and infrastructure of pilgrimage sites in recent years.

“Prime Minister Modi ji has always shown deep respect for the teachings of Sikh Gurus and deep love for the Sangat. In the last eleven years, his visionary leadership has transformed several Sikh religious sites and improved accessibility to major pilgrimage sites,” Puri added.

The sacred relics, if properly displayed, can become an important place of spiritual and cultural pilgrimage for Sikhs across the world.

The Prime Minister is expected to review the recommendations before taking a final decision on the permanent protection and public display of the sacred ‘Jora Sahib’.
