Diet Shift Risks Gut Health, Says NITI Aayog Report

India’s top policy think tank, NITI Aayog, has raised concerns over the rapid shift in dietary habits, warning that it could negatively impact gut health among the population. The report highlights how increasing consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, and low-fibre diets is disrupting the natural balance of gut microbiota.

Experts note that traditional Indian diets, once rich in fibre, fermented foods, and diverse nutrients, are being replaced by urban eating patterns. This transition is contributing to digestive disorders, weakened immunity, and a rise in lifestyle-related diseases.

Gut Health Linked to Overall Wellbeing

The report emphasises that gut health plays a crucial role beyond digestion. A healthy gut microbiome is directly linked to immunity, metabolism, and even mental health. Studies show that an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to issues such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory diseases.

According to health experts, poor dietary choices combined with stress, lack of sleep, and excessive antibiotic use are further worsening gut health in India. This makes it essential to adopt balanced eating habits and lifestyle changes.

    India Emerging as Probiotic Leader

Despite these concerns, India is emerging as a global leader in the probiotic movement. The report highlights the country’s growing focus on functional foods, nutraceuticals, and probiotic-rich diets.

Probiotics often referred to as “good bacteria” help maintain gut balance and improve digestion. Indigenous strains of probiotics, commonly found in traditional Indian foods like curd and fermented dishes, are gaining global recognition for their effectiveness.

India’s expanding nutraceutical market is also contributing to this trend, with increasing demand for probiotic supplements and fortified foods. The sector is expected to see strong growth due to rising health awareness and preventive healthcare practices.

    Need to Preserve Traditional Diets

The think tank has stressed the importance of preserving traditional dietary practices that naturally support gut health. Foods such as fermented grains, pickles, and dairy products have long been part of Indian cuisine and offer natural probiotic benefits.

Experts recommend increasing intake of fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while reducing processed and ultra-processed food consumption. Public awareness campaigns and policy interventions may also play a key role in promoting healthier eating habits.

    Policy Push for Better Nutrition

NITI Aayog has been actively working to improve nutrition outcomes across the country through collaborations and policy initiatives. Recent partnerships aim to strengthen nutrition awareness, especially in underserved regions, and encourage healthier lifestyles.

The report concludes that while India is well-positioned to lead the global probiotic movement, urgent steps are needed to address the negative effects of dietary transitions. Balancing modern food habits with traditional nutrition wisdom will be key to safeguarding long-term public health.
