Hailstorm hits UP; storm alert in 18 districts today

A sudden spell of extreme weather has impacted several parts of Uttar Pradesh, with hailstorms reported in multiple cities over the past 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in at least 18 districts, with conditions expected to worsen across the state from tomorrow.

Hailstorm batters several cities in 48 hours

Over the last two days, nearly 10 cities across Uttar Pradesh witnessed intense hailstorms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. The sudden weather change disrupted normal life and caused significant damage to crop, especially in regions like Kanpur and nearby districts.

Farmers reported heavy losses as standing crops such as wheat, pulses were destroyed due to strong winds.

Thunderstorm alert issued in 18 districts

The IMD has issued a warning for thunderstorms around 18 districts of the states,along with rainfall, reaching speed of 40-60KM/H are expected in several areas.

Cities including Lucknow and surrounding regions may experience cloudy skies, lightning, and isolated hailstorm activity. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially during evening hours when storm activity is likely to intensify.

Western disturbance behind sudden weather change

Meteorologists have attributed the sudden shift in weather to an active Western Disturbance affecting North India. This system, originating from the Mediterranean region, brings moisture and triggers rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms across northern states.

A stronger spell of this system is expected to impact large parts of North India, including Uttar Pradesh, between April 7 and April 10, leading to more intense weather conditions.

Weather to worsen from tomorrow

According to IMD forecasts, the current weather activity is just the beginning, with more severe conditions expected from tomorrow. Rainfall intensity, storm activity, and wind speeds are likely to increase across the state.

The department has warned of widespread rain, lightning, and possible hailstorms in many regions, urging people to stay indoors during severe weather and avoid open areas during lightning strikes.

Advisory for farmers and residents

Authorities have advised farmers to take precautionary measures to protect crops and harvested produce from further damage. Residents are urged to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and stay updated with official weather alerts.
