Hansi Farmers Protest: Lathicharge, Stone-Pelting During CM Nayab Saini’s August 15 Event; SP Injured

Hansi: Tension erupted in Haryana’s Hansi on Friday as police clashed with farmers protesting against Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s Independence Day programme. The situation turned violent after police used a lathi-charge to disperse farmers who were trying to move towards the venue of the Chief Minister’s flag-hoisting programme.

Several farmers suffered injuries during the lathi-charge, while stone-pelting was reported from both sides during the confrontation. Hansi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) were also injured after stones were allegedly hurled at police personnel.

The SP sustained an injury to his hand and was seen tying a handkerchief around it to stop the bleeding.

Farmers stopped from reaching CM’s programme

The police had stopped farmers outside Hansi city and blocked entry points to prevent them from reaching the Government College, where Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was scheduled to hoist the national flag on Independence Day.

As the protesting farmers tried to move towards the venue, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse them near the Sisay bridge. Several farmers were injured in the action, with at least one reportedly suffering a head injury.

Women who had gathered to participate in the protest were also stopped by police personnel. Some of them took shelter inside nearby shops as the situation escalated.

The confrontation intensified after stone-pelting broke out. Police personnel were also seen pelting stones at the protesting crowd amid the chaos.

Several people were detained during the protest, including farmer leader Suresh Kauth, while some others were reportedly placed under house arrest.

The farmers subsequently warned that they would block the National Highway if those detained were not released by 3 p.m.

Congress MLA Naresh Selwal also reached the spot and extended his support to the protesting farmers.

Farmers demanding arrest in Jeevan Kundu murder case

The protest was linked to the killing of dairy operator Jeevan Kundu, who was allegedly beaten to death with sticks and clubs in Hisar on August 4.

According to police, nine accused have so far been arrested in connection with the murder. Two more accused, identified as Vivek, a resident of Bhatla in Hansi, and Sumit alias Suti Khan of Dayal Singh Colony, Hansi, were arrested on Friday.

Earlier, seven accused, including Bhanu Kumar, Gajendra alias Gajju Pandit and Sahil, had been arrested and sent to jail.

However, the prime accused, Ramesh Sharma, remains absconding. Police have announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest. Farmers have been demanding his immediate arrest.

The agitation intensified after farmers and Khap representatives shut seven toll plazas in Hisar, Hansi and Rohtak for nearly three hours on Friday, demanding action against the absconding accused. The toll plazas were reopened around 2 p.m.

The protest affected toll plazas at Landhri, Chaudharywas and Agroha in Hisar, Ramayan and Bas in Hansi, and Makrauli and Chandi in Rohtak.

During the blockade, heated arguments were reported between protesters and vehicle drivers at some locations, while at other places, protesters were seen requesting motorists to cooperate.

The latest confrontation in Hansi has added to tensions between farmers and the administration, with protesters pressing for the arrest of the prime accused in the Jeevan Kundu murder case.
