Global Health Alert After Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship; Passengers Isolated Across Countries
May 11, 2026
A deadly outbreak of the rare Andes strain of hantavirus aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius has triggered a major international health response, with passengers from several countries placed under monitoring, quarantine, and medical testing.
The outbreak has so far been linked to at least eight cases, including three deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The ship was carrying passengers and crew from more than 20 countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Australia, India, and the Philippines.
British Passengers Placed in Isolation
Several British passengers evacuated from the hantavirus-hit cruise ship have been placed under isolation and medical observation as authorities monitor possible infections linked to the outbreak.
Health officials in the UK are closely tracking passengers who recently returned from the vessel, with precautionary measures implemented to prevent further spread of the virus.
American Passenger Tests Positive for Hantavirus
US health authorities confirmed that one American passenger who travelled aboard the cruise ship has tested positive for hantavirus. The patient is currently under medical care and being monitored by public health officials.
Authorities in the United States are also tracing other passengers who may have had close contact with infected individuals during the voyage.
German Passengers Evacuated Safely
Germany has begun evacuation and health screening procedures for its citizens who were onboard the affected cruise ship. German passengers were transferred under strict medical supervision as part of international containment efforts.
Officials said passengers are undergoing testing and observation following their evacuation.
Spain Preparing for More Than 90 Evacuees
Spanish health authorities said more than 90 passengers from the cruise ship were expected to arrive on Sunday. Preparations have been made to receive the evacuees, including medical checks, isolation arrangements, and emergency response teams at designated locations.
Spain has intensified monitoring measures after the outbreak raised concerns among international health agencies.
Indian Crew Members Quarantined
The Indian Embassy confirmed that two Indian crew members evacuated from the ship were healthy and asymptomatic. However, they were placed under quarantine in the Netherlands as a precautionary measure under international health protocols.
Passengers from Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries were also subjected to health checks, isolation procedures, and contact tracing after leaving the vessel.
Ship Under Strict Health Measures
Before passengers were evacuated, those onboard were ordered to remain isolated inside their cabins while medical teams conducted screenings and disinfection operations. Health workers wearing protective gear supervised evacuations and transfers from the ship.
Authorities said the ship will undergo extensive sanitization and investigation before any future operations are permitted.
