Har Ghar Jal Push: 2.69 Lakh Villages Fully Covered with Tap Water

New Delhi: Parliament was informed that tap water is now available to all households in 2.69 lakh villages under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal. Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna said that the scheme, being implemented in partnership with states since August 2019, aims to provide functional tap connections for potable water in approximately 5.86 lakh villages.

Progress and Connection Data
At the time of the launch of JJM, only 3.23 crore rural households (17%) had tap water. By December 16, 2025, approximately 12.53 crore additional rural households have been provided with tap connections. Of the 193.6 million rural households in the country, 157.6 million (81.42%) households in 58.2 million villages have tap water supply, while work for the remaining households is underway as per the saturation plans of the states/union territories.

Renewable Energy and Monitoring System

The JJM provides for the installation of solar-powered water supply systems in isolated, tribal, and hilly villages. Solar energy is also being used in single- and multi-village pumping schemes. A multi-level system has been developed for effective implementation and monitoring of the scheme, including geo-tagging of assets under construction, third-party inspections, field visits, capacity-building workshops, and regular reviews. While drinking water is a state subject, the central government provides technical and financial assistance to the states.
