Harbhajan Singh congratulates Shubman Gill on becoming India’s ODI captain

Chandigarh: Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has congratulated young batsman Shubman Gill on being appointed the new captain of the ODI team. Harbhajan Singh said, “I heartily congratulate Shubman Gill on becoming the captain.”

It is a matter of pride for me that a player from Punjab is captaining the Indian team not only in ODIs but also in Test formats. He further said that he hopes that Shubman Gill will carry forward the legacy of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and other former Indian captains and take the team to new heights.

Harbhajan said that Shubman’s dedication to the game and calm nature will make him a better leader. Bhajji said, “It’s a matter of pride for me that the young player from Punjab was first made captain in the Test format. Then, now he has been made captain in ODI cricket as well.”

BCCI strips Rohit Sharma of ODI captaincy

It should be noted that yesterday, the BCCI stripped Rohit Sharma of the captaincy of India’s ODI team and appointed Gill in his place. The Indian team announced for the three-match ODI series against Australia includes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but Shubman Gill has been named captain.

Gill is already the Test captain. Rohit and Virat last played an ODI against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on March 9th of this year. Team India will play three ODIs and five T20Is on their tour of Australia. The first ODI will be played in Perth on October 19th.

Gill has played 55 ODIs so far.

Shubman Gill has played 55 One Day Internationals so far, scoring 2,775 runs with eight centuries at an average of 59.04 and a strike rate of 99.56. Gill lacks much experience captaining in the 50-over format. He has captained six List A matches, winning five of them. Gill has never captained in One Day Internationals.
