New Delhi: Rajya Sabha nominated member Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected Deputy Chairman for the third consecutive time. He was elected to the post without any opposition.
Leader of the House J. P. Nadda proposed his nomination, which was unanimously accepted. The post fell vacant after the expiry of his term on the 9th of this month.
President Droupadi Murmu nominated him to the Rajya Sabha after the retirement of former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
Emphasis on healthy debate, not disruption
After being elected Deputy Chairman, Harivansh said that differences of opinion and healthy debate are necessary in a democracy, but there should be no place for disruption in the functioning of Parliament.
He said that the rules of the House provide all members with ample opportunity to express their views and everyone should follow them.
Confident of maintaining the dignity of the House
Harivansh assured that he would make every effort to maintain the dignity of the House and protect the rights of members, in accordance with the Constitution, parliamentary rules, and traditions.
He expressed gratitude to the President, the Prime Minister, and MPs from all parties for re-entrusting him with the responsibility.
Leaders of all parties congratulated
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harivansh, praising his experience and leadership, and said that the House has become more effective and constructive during his tenure.
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also wished him well and expressed hope that the interests of the opposition would also be taken care of.
J.P. Nadda said that his unanimous election reflects the spirit of consensus and cooperation in Indian democracy, while other leaders also praised his balanced and impartial working style.
