Harsimrat Kaur Thanks PM Modi, Amit Shah for Support After Attack on Sukhbir Badal

New Delhi: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal’s wife and party MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for enquiring about Badal’s health following the attack on him in Maharashtra’s Nanded.

Harsimrat Kaur said the concern, support and wishes extended by the two leaders during the difficult time meant a lot to her family, the party and the people of Punjab.

Harsimrat thanks PM Modi for personal call

In a post on X, Harsimrat Kaur expressed gratitude to PM Modi for personally calling to enquire about Sukhbir Badal’s health and wishing him a speedy recovery.

She also thanked the Prime Minister for taking immediate cognisance of the incident and directing central investigating agencies to coordinate with Maharashtra Police in the probe.

Harsimrat said Modi’s concern and support had deeply touched her and the family.

Thanks Amit Shah for support and probe

Harsimrat Kaur also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for reaching out to her and enquiring about Sukhbir Badal’s health.

She expressed gratitude for Shah’s personal concern and reassurance, and thanked him for his commitment to ensuring an effective investigation into the incident.

She described the attack at a Gurdwara in Maharashtra as a serious violation of the fundamental tenets of Sikhism.

Sukhbir Badal attacked at Nanded Gurdwara

Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after an assailant in Nihang attire allegedly attacked him with a kirpan at Mata Sahib Kaur Gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday.

The incident took place when Badal visited the Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area on the outskirts of Nanded city. The attacker was immediately overpowered and taken into custody by police.

The accused, identified by local authorities as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, is being questioned as Maharashtra Police investigate the motive behind the attack.

According to sources, the attacker allegedly attempted to stab Badal in the stomach, but security personnel intervened and prevented a more serious injury. Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was deployed on special security duty, was also injured during the incident.

A video recorded after the attack showed Badal walking with a saffron cloth wrapped around his right hand. He sustained minor injuries to his hand and shoulder and was taken to Yashosai Hospital for treatment.

Badal survived previous assassination attempt

Earlier on Thursday, Sukhbir Badal had visited Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded along with his family. Harsimrat Kaur was present when the attack occurred.

This was not the first attack on the SAD leader. On December 4, 2024, Badal survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

He escaped unharmed in that incident, while the gunman was quickly overpowered and arrested.

At the time, Badal was performing sewadar duties at the Golden Temple after the Akal Takht had pronounced tankhah (religious punishment) on him and several other Akali Dal leaders over alleged mistakes during the party’s rule in Punjab between 2007 and 2017.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a full inquiry into the latest incident.
