Haryana: ASI Balwinder Singh, caught red-handed accepting bribe, sentenced to 4 years prison

In a corruption case, the Honorable Additional District and Sessions Judge, Kaithal, has convicted the accused, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Balwinder Singh of District Kaithal. He has been sentenced to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 under Section 7 and Section 13(1)(b) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. In the event of non-payment of the fine, the accused shall undergo an additional imprisonment of 5 months.

According to the details of the case, the complainant, Sandeep Kumar, alleged in a complaint submitted to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Ambala, that the accused had extorted a bribe of ₹60,000 by exerting pressure regarding the arrest in FIR No. 284/2023 (a case involving a physical altercation), the investigation of which was being conducted at the Bhagal Police Post.

Furthermore, in connection with this same case, a bribe of ₹50,000 each was demanded from the complainant, as well as from Shekhar and Aman—the sons of the complainant’s neighbor, Jaipal—in exchange for removing their names from the case; an advance bribe of ₹10,000 was specifically being demanded at that time.

Acting upon the said complaint, a team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Ambala, apprehended the accused, ASI Balwinder Singh, red-handed while he was accepting the bribe of ₹10,000 from the complainant. In this regard, a case was registered against the accused vide FIR No. 30 dated December 12, 2023, under Sections 7 and 13(1)(b) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station, Ambala.

Upon the completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was submitted against the accused before the Honorable Court, Kaithal, on February 8, 2024; after hearing the matter, the Court pronounced the accused guilty and delivered the aforementioned sentence.
