Haryana on High Alert Due to Cold Wave and Dense Fog: Government Issues Guidelines

Panchkula: The government has been put on high alert due to the cold and fog in Haryana. Issuing guidelines, the government has urged residents to strictly adhere to these guidelines. The guidelines state that people should regularly receive weather updates. For this, they can consult radio, television, and newspapers.

In fact, the state has been experiencing dense fog for two days. During this period, 62 vehicles collided in seven districts of the state. Four people, including an 11th-grade student, have died. Around 166 people are reported injured. These road accidents occurred in various locations. Chief Minister Nayab Saini expressed grief over these accidents and announced financial assistance of ₹2.5 lakh to the families of the students.

Read here what the guidelines are regarding cold waves.

The government’s guidelines state that during a cold wave, stay indoors as much as possible and only travel for essential purposes to avoid exposure to cold air. Wear multiple layers of light, loose, windproof woolen clothing instead of a single layer of heavy clothing. When outdoors, cover your head, face, hands, and feet with appropriate warm clothing.

To maintain body heat, eat nutritious foods, such as healthy foods rich in vitamin C, fruits, and vegetables. Drink warm fluids regularly to maintain body temperature.

    Don’t ignore tremors

Don’t ignore shivering. This is an important first sign that the body is losing heat, and the affected person should be brought indoors immediately. Keep your body dry. If you get wet, change clothes quickly to conserve body heat. Take proper care of the elderly and children and avoid unnecessary outings. Avoid alcohol. It lowers your body temperature.

    Keep animals indoors

Prolonged exposure to cold can cause the skin to become pale, hard, and fissured, and black lesions may appear on exposed areas of the body, such as thumbs, toes, noses, or earlobes. If this occurs, consult a doctor immediately. Take care of your pet during cold temperatures and keep them indoors. If any health problems arise, consult a veterinarian.

What to do if you have hypothermia

In case of hypothermia (low body temperature), move the person to a warm place and change their clothing. Warm the person’s body with skin-to-skin contact, dry blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets. Give warm drinks to help raise body temperature. Do not give alcohol. If the condition worsens, seek immediate medical attention. In an emergency, dial 112.

    This alert regarding fog

The main guidelines for fog are slow speed, use of low-beam headlights, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and alertness. When driving in fog, reduce speed, keep headlights on low beam, use fog lights (if available), and maintain sufficient distance from the vehicle behind to avoid a collision if you brake suddenly. Turn off unnecessary horns or radios and open the windows slightly to listen to the outside noise.
