Haryana: Grandfather Shot Dead in Chest; Family Dispute and Religious Conversion Angle Under Probe

In Karnal, Haryana, a grandson shot and killed his grandfather. The accused grandson fired a point-blank shot directly into his chest. The grandfather fell to the ground and died shortly thereafter.

After committing the crime, the accused fled on his bike, brandishing a weapon in the street. Police have sealed the scene and launched an investigation. The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Darshan Singh of Bada village.

Police investigations have revealed that the grandson was upset over the division of 12 acres of land. The two had been arguing over this for a long time. Before committing the crime, he hid the weapon at the crime scene, then brought his grandfather there and shot him.

The deceased’s daughter says the accused nephew’s mother has converted to Christianity and lives in a separate house with her son.

Land Dispute and Family Tensions Emerge as Key Factors

According to the deceased’s eldest daughter, Naro Devi, her elder brother Badahur has passed away, and his son Sonu (30) lives separately with his mother. She said she was visiting her sister-in-law in Mangalpur village when the incident occurred and rushed back after receiving news of her father’s death. Naro Devi stated that her father, Darshan Singh, owned 12 acres of land, including two-and-a-half acres that belonged to his wife. After her death, that portion was transferred to the eldest son, while Darshan Singh later distributed five acres each among his other sons and retained the remaining land. She alleged that Sonu frequently quarreled over the land distribution. Naro Devi further claimed that Sonu’s mother had converted to Christianity and alleged that both she and Sonu used to harass Darshan Singh, with the disputes intensifying after the death of Sonu’s grandmother.

DSP said – the weapon was already hidden

Indri DSP Satish Gautam said that police arrived at the scene as soon as they received information about the incident. The body has been taken into custody and further investigation has been initiated. The accused had hidden the weapon at the scene before shooting the grandfather. He then brought the grandfather there and shot him.
