Haryana IPS officer’s suicide: Chandigarh SIT summons IAS wife, seeks case files

Chandigarh: The investigation into the suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar escalated on Sunday, with the Chandigarh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) arriving in Rohtak and formally seeking case-related documents from the Haryana government. The SIT has also summoned the officer’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, to a Chandigarh hospital to identify the body, a required step before the postmortem.

Puran Kumar died by suicide on October 7 at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh. A leaked photograph from the scene showed him lying on a sofa in a soundproof basement, with a pistol in his right hand and visible head injuries. His family has refused postmortem until their demands are met.

With tensions rising, a Mahapanchayat was held at Guru Ravidas Gurdwara in Sector 20, Chandigarh. The gathering turned chaotic after former MP and Loktantra Suraksha Party chief Rajkumar Saini claimed from the stage that Maharishi Valmiki was a Brahmin, triggering protests from attendees.

The Mahapanchayat issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding the removal of Haryana DGP Shatrughan Kapoor and arrest of former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia. Leaders warned of intensified protests if their demands were ignored.

Following the meeting, participants attempted to submit a memorandum to Governor Asim Ghosh, but police intervened. The Governor later visited IAS officer Amneet Kumar’s residence and met her for 22 minutes. Haryana CID ADGP Saurabh Singh had reached earlier.

Meanwhile, the government held discussions with the family for a sixth consecutive day but failed to reach consensus on the postmortem. Cabinet Minister Krishna Bedi said the Rohtak SP had already been removed at the family’s request and expressed hope for resolution soon.

Chandigarh Police has invoked Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST Act, replacing Section 3(1)(r), increasing the offence’s severity and allowing for life imprisonment. Members of a 31-member support committee accused the government of offering mere jobs instead of justice.
