Panchkula, April 12: The Haryana Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for the municipal corporation elections in the state tomorrow. The Commission is currently making preparations to hold a press conference. If, for any reason, the announcement does not take place on Monday, the conference may possibly be held on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Congress party is also gearing up to approach the court once again.

The long-standing impasse regarding the delimitation of wards for the municipal corporation elections has come to an end following an order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In compliance with the High Court’s directive, the Urban Local Bodies Department issued a fresh notification on April 10, reserving seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) based on the 2011 Census data. Consequently, the Election Commission has also commenced its preparations for the polls.

However, a petition filed by the Congress party in the High Court seeking the mandatory use of VVPATs alongside EVMs remains pending and is scheduled for a hearing on April 20. Nevertheless, the Court has not issued any order that would effectively stay or halt the elections. As such, this matter is not expected to have any impact on the Election Commission’s schedule.
