Western Disturbance Brings Severe Cold, Dense Fog in Haryana; Rain Likely After January 19

Chandigarh: A western disturbance is expected to arrive in Haryana today, potentially bringing a change in the weather. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for fog and cold wave conditions across Haryana.

Cold-Day Conditions in Several Districts

Cold-day conditions are prevailing in Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Ambala. Several districts, including Sonipat, Panipat, Bhiwani, and Fatehabad, are experiencing dense fog and strong, cold winds in the morning. Visibility has dropped to zero in many cities.

Drizzle alert for several cities

Earlier on Thursday, fog and cold wave continued to linger in many parts of the state. Minimum temperatures increased slightly over the past 24 hours, but remained well below normal. The Meteorological Department has also issued a drizzle alert for several cities in the state starting tomorrow.

On Friday, Bhiwani was the coldest place in the state, with a temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Schools to Reopen Monday After Extended Winter Break

In response to the cold, the Haryana government extended the winter holidays by two days. Government and private schools in Haryana will now reopen on Monday.

This is the fifth time in the last 15 years that the minimum temperature in Hisar reached 0.2 degrees. The minimum temperature in Hisar broke the record of the last 2 years. In 2025, the temperature was recorded at 3.5 degrees on January 15, and in 2024, it was recorded at 1.5 degrees on December 16.

Bhiwani Coldest in Haryana, Hisar Breaks 2-Year Record

Bhiwani was the coldest place in the state today. Although the average minimum temperature on Friday increased slightly by 1.2°C compared to Thursday, the state’s average temperature still remained 2.1°C below normal.

In many other districts, the mercury hovered around 2 degrees Celsius, increasing the chill. The minimum temperature in Hisar dropped by about 4.4 degrees Celsius, rising by 0.2 degrees to 2.2 degrees Celsius. Narnaul recorded a low of 2.0 degrees Celsius and Mahendragarh recorded a low of 2.7 degrees Celsius.

Future Weather Outlook 

1. Fog to Persist, Cold to Ease

Cold wave conditions are expected to gradually subside on January 17 and 18. However, light to moderate fog may continue during night and early morning hours.

2. Rain Likely After January 19

According to CCS Haryana Agricultural University, two western disturbances on January 16 and 19 may bring drizzle on January 17–18, followed by rain across most districts after January 19.
