17 FIRs filed in a week in Haryana for abortion cases, 13 centres sealed

The meeting focused on curbing illegal abortions and intensifying efforts to further improve the sex ratio of the state under the 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The weekly meeting of the State Task Force (STF) to improve sex ratio in Haryana was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Sudhir Rajpal. The meeting focused on curbing illegal abortions and intensifying efforts to further improve the sex ratio of the state under the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the meeting, the Additional Chief Secretary stressed on a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal abortion practices and directed officials to increase monitoring at all levels. He warned that strict action will also be taken against officials found negligent in enforcing the law. He said that the cases of doctors found involved in illegal abortions will be sent to the Medical Council of India for cancellation of their licenses.

It was told in the meeting that in the last week (May 6 to 12), 19 raids were conducted and 17 FIRs were registered across the state for illegal sale of MTP kits. 13 shops were sealed and 145 MTP kits were seized when illegal activities were found. Legal action will be initiated against the accused under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act-1940.

It is worth mentioning that after the formation of STF, a total of 43 FIRs have been registered, 21 shops sealed and 6200 MTP kits seized in the state. The department was directed to strictly follow up on all registered cases and work in collaboration with the police authorities to trace the persons involved in illegal practices and take these cases to their logical conclusion.

Sudhir Rajpal also stressed on conducting intensive inspections at MTP centres to prevent illegal abortions. To regulate the sale of MTP kits, the officials were directed to ensure that no MTP kit is sold without the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) identification number. To ensure better accuracy in birth registration data, the officials were asked to visit slums every week and organize birth registration camps to ensure that no newborn remains unregistered in the state.
