Resignation of Congress MLA in Haryana

Speaker Gyan Chand Gupta accepted; Varun Chaudhary has become MP from Ambala.

Chandigarh: Congress MLA Varun Chaudhary in Haryana has resigned from the membership of the Legislative Assembly. Varun Chaudhary, who reached the house of Speaker Gian Chand Gupta, submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the Speaker. Varun has now become an MP from the Ambala Lok Sabha seat.

He became MLA from the Mullana Assembly of Ambala in 2019. He won the Lok Sabha elections by defeating BJP candidate and former Union Minister Ratan Lal Kataria’s wife, Banto Kataria.

High Court advocate and election analyst Hemant Kumar says that, as per the rules, any MLA has to leave the membership of the Legislative Assembly within 14 days of the notification of his election as a Lok Sabha member. Or the Lok Sabha seat from which he has won the parliamentary elections is declared vacant. In such a situation, Varun Chaudhary had to resign from the post of MLA of Mullana Assembly before June 20.

Varun was also the chairman of the most important committee of the Assembly, i.e., the Public Accounts Committee (PSC)). With his resignation from the post of MLA, another MLA will now be nominated by the Assembly Speaker as the new chairman of this Public Accounts Committee. Since the next general elections of the Haryana Legislative Assembly are scheduled for October this year, there will be no by-election for the vacant Mullana assembly seat.

Varun Chaudhary has practised as a lawyer in Ambala Court. During this time, influenced by the political atmosphere at home, he joined the Congress. Seeing his hard work and dedication, the Congress party first gave him the responsibility of the organization and then gave him a ticket from the Mullana seat in the Haryana Assembly elections in the year 2019.

In this, he defeated BJP candidate Rajbir Singh by 1,688 votes. He was awarded the ‘Best MLA Award’ in March 2021 due to his active participation and remarkable work while a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly.

This time he has stated his total assets to be around Rs 26 crore in the affidavit given to the Election Commission. However, he has also stated a liability of about Rs 62 lakh. He has admitted in his affidavit that his wife and children do not have any money.

Apart from this, he has claimed that no case is pending against him in any court in the country.
