Given the huge number of ticket seekers in the civic polls, the BJP has decided not to contest on the party symbol on ward councilor seats in over a dozen municipal committees in Haryana. The move comes following recommendations from local party units.
It is aimed at preventing division of votes, possible resentment among candidates and rebellion by those denied tickets. Elections to eight municipal corporations, four municipal councils, and 21 municipal committees are scheduled for March 2, while polling in Panipat will be held on March 9 due to delay in finalizing the voters’ list.
Party sources revealed that the decision was taken due to the large number of candidates in smaller wards, leading to competition within the party. Local units had told the core committee at the recent meeting in Delhi that most of the infighting in these committees was between BJP workers, all vying for the party ticket.
Rather than risk alienating one loyal worker from another, we decided not to contest on the party symbol, a senior party leader told PTI.
However, some leaders favoured contesting on party symbol only. On this, Punia clarified, that where there is no contest among BJP workers, candidates will be allowed to use the party symbol.
Local units will make the final decision. BJP state president Mohan Lal Baroli highlighted the unique nature of these elections, saying, “These wards are small, with around 5,000 voters, and elections here are often a family affair. So we prefer not to get involved directly.
