40 companies of Haryana have been found guilty of illegally extracting water from the ground. The owners of these companies were engaged in exploiting groundwater by installing tube wells. No one had permission to use groundwater. These companies were using groundwater indiscriminately by installing tube wells.
Haryana Water Resources Authority has now issued instructions to close all these 40 companies. Most of these companies are real estate, mining and transport related companies. Most of these companies are from Gurugram, Faridabad and Sonipat. The authority has asked the concerned Deputy Commissioners to close these companies and seek compliance report.
The condition of groundwater in Haryana is not good. 88 blocks are in the red zone. Excessive exploitation is being done in these zones. The situation of some cities is such that there is water left only for 50 years. In such a situation, the National Green Tribunal has several times directed the state government and the authority to stop this.
In the year 2021, the authority had made it mandatory for industries using groundwater to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC). A fee has to be paid along with the application and telemetry is installed, which shows how much water has been extracted and the fee has to be paid accordingly. The authority has warned the industry several times by issuing public notices to get an NOC, but the industry owners did not take it seriously.
