Chandigarh: The wait to elect the city government in Haryana may end soon. After the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the State Election Commission (SEC) has come into active mode regarding the civic elections. It has been decided that after making the necessary changes by this month, the voter list will be finalized by January 6.

State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh has issued guidelines to other officers including Deputy Commissioners and Municipal Corporation Commissioners across the state. The State Election Commissioner has also released the schedule for the final publication of voter lists.

State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh said that the final voter list published earlier will be distributed by December 16. Lok Sabha and Assembly elections have been conducted on the basis of the respective voter list. Now the initial draft of the voter list will be kept at all the booths at the civic level on December 17, so that the voters of these wards will be able to see their name, address, photo etc. in the voter list.

On the basis of the draft, forms can be submitted till December 23 for making new votes, deleting, and amendments in the voter list.

Commission officials said that under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Election Rules-1994, all the applications submitted as claims and objections till December 27 will be settled by the competent authorities. If the voter has an objection to any decision, he can appeal before the Deputy Commissioner till December 31. These appeals will be resolved by January 3, 2025. After this, the final publication of the new voter list will be done on January 6. Body elections will be conducted on the basis of the revised voter list.

The bodies of Haryana whose elections are pending include 8 municipal corporations, 4 municipal councils and 23 municipalities. After the term of these bodies ended, the elections were stuck in delimitation, Lok Sabha-Vidhan Sabha elections and reservation. Last year, an NGO Janaagraha had found in its survey that more than 1400 cities of the country, including Gurugram and Faridabad, do not have elected mayors and councillors. Due to the absence of public representatives, there are many problems in the cities.
