Mumbai, June 1: Haryana’s boxer Naman Tanwar has won the gold medal by defeating China’s boxer 4-1 in the ongoing Thailand Open International Tournament in Thailand. Naman Tanwar is also the boxer who won India’s first boxing medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Naman, originally from Haluwas village in Bhiwani and currently a resident of DC Colony Bhiwani, started playing the sport to keep himself fit. After which he did not know when he became fond of boxing. He started playing the sport in 2012, when he was about 14 years old.
Naman Tanwar practices at Dronacharya Awardee Captain Hawa Singh Sheoran Academy in Bhiwani. Naman Tanwar is a senior TTE of Northern Railway, currently posted at Anand Vihar station.
Won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth
Indian boxer Naman Tanwar won the bronze medal in the men’s 91kg category on the 9th day of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 19-year-old boxer lost 0-4 to Australia’s Jason Whatley in the semi-final bout and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Return after injury
Naman Tanwar suffered a back injury during the Tokyo Olympic Games qualifier tournament. Due to which he was away from the ring for 2 years. Due to the long distance from the ring, he faced a lot of difficulties in making a comeback. After winning silver in the National held in Bareilly, his way was cleared for the Thailand Open International Tournament. Where he made a good comeback.
Students of MDU, Rohtak
Bhiwani’s boxer Naman Tanwar has completed his graduation from MDU. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in English honours. In class 10, Naman told his father that he can do well in only one thing. To which his father told him to do games, from where he will get recognition. After that, Naman did well in studies and also won medals for the country in games.
Father has been the President’s security guard
Naman Tanwar’s father Sundar Tanwar, a resident of Haluwas village in Bhiwani, has been a security guard for the President. But some incidents happened in the family due to which he resigned from the job. His grandfather was a member of the Sri Lankan Peace Army, who was martyred there. On the basis of his compassion, the state government appointed him as a clerk in the Revenue Department in the year 2016. Since then he is posted in the DC office of Bhiwani.
