Chandigarh: The special K9 unit of the Haryana Police has made significant strides in anti-narcotics operations since the start of 2025. This unit, composed of highly trained dogs, has played a crucial role in solving various cases.

The partnership between the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Haryana Police’s K9 units has proven essential in the ongoing battle against drugs in the state. Officials noted that the performance of these four-legged heroes has been exceptional, showcasing impressive skills in narcotics detection and bolstering law enforcement efforts in Haryana.

Currently, the K9 unit consists of 62 skilled dogs trained for narcotics detection across the country. Since the beginning of this year, these units have excelled in operations, significantly enhancing the state’s narcotics enforcement initiatives. The specially trained dogs have shown remarkable resilience, successfully identifying narcotics even in challenging environments.

Recent achievements include ‘Oscar,’ who detected 442 grams of a sulfa drug in Rewari district, and ‘Rainbow’ and ‘Jagga,’ who uncovered 72 grams of Chitta in Hisar district. These successes underscore the effectiveness of the K9s in ensuring safety and combating illegal drug trafficking in Haryana, as stated by officials on Tuesday.

Beyond narcotics detection, the dogs also demonstrated their exceptional obedience, agility, and courage during the Republic Day celebrations in Faridabad. Governor Bandaru Dattatraya, the chief guest at the parade, commended the K9 teams for their invaluable contributions to law enforcement.

The Director General of Haryana Police praised the K9 units for their relentless efforts, stating that these dogs are crucial for crime investigation, narcotics detection, and explosive detection. Their role significantly enhances the state’s crime-fighting capabilities.

The Haryana Police are responsible for training and deploying these dogs, ensuring that the K9 units are always ready for their essential roles in safeguarding the citizens of Haryana. The ongoing success of the Narcotics Control Bureau K9s, along with the dedication of the Haryana Police, marks a significant advancement in the fight against narcotics in the region. These canine officers consistently prove to be vital in maintaining safety in the state.

The Haryana Police utilize three types of dogs—tracker dogs, explosive detection dogs, and narcotics dogs—classified according to their specific skills. Last year, the police expanded their dog squad from 36 to 63 trained dogs, each equipped with advanced training to aid in solving crimes and apprehending offenders.

Currently, there are 63 dogs in service, with five assigned to the Narcotics Control Bureau and 58 distributed across various districts. Each dog is managed by a dedicated handler and assistant handler. The squad primarily consists of three breeds: Belgian Shepherds, German Shepherds, and Labradors. After approximately 10 years of service, dogs retire, and typically, they are given to their handlers. If a handler declines to take the dog, it is usually transferred to an NGO or social organization, according to a senior official.
