Bulldozers run on illegal religious places in Chandigarh

A temple and a mosque were demolished in Dhanas village; the corporation had given notice earlier.

Chandigarh: A temple and a mosque built on government land in Chandigarh have been demolished by the Municipal Corporation team today. For this, they were earlier given a notice by the Municipal Corporation. But after the notice, they did not demolish it themselves.

After this, the Chandigarh administration took this action today.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation team reached the spot today with a heavy police force. Residents had also opposed it. But this action has been taken by the corporation in the presence of the police force.

The Chandigarh administration had issued notices to about 150 temples, mosques, gurudwaras, and churches built illegally in the city. They were given four weeks. Now the administration has started taking action against them.

There are about 106 religious places in it, which are built on the land of the Municipal Corporation, while the rest of the religious places are on the land of the Chandigarh Administration. This action is being taken by the Chandigarh Administration on the orders of the High Court. The High Court had recently ordered the demolition of religious places built on public land in a case.

Recently, Chandigarh DC Vinay Pratap Singh held a meeting with all the departments regarding this matter and asked them to prepare a list of illegal constructions. In the meeting, the SDM and CDPO were also ordered to prepare a plan to demolish all these religious places.

At the same time, the DC had ordered the engineering department of the Municipal Corporation to cut off the electricity and water connections of all such illegal structures. The DC had said that whatever action will be taken, its report should be given immediately. All this action is being taken under the supervision of the Punjab and Haryana High Courts. Now the High Court will hear this case on August 20.
