Electricity generates from garbage in Chandigarh

ISWM is to be constructed based on design, finance, own, operate, and transfer.

Chandigarh: The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate has decided to seek people’s opinions before setting up the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) facility in Dadumajra, Chandigarh. For this, the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee will hold a hearing at the Community Center in Sector 38 at 11 a.m. on July 30. Municipal Corporation officials will also be present on this occasion. At the same time, whatever opinion is given by the people during this time, a report will be prepared and sent to the ministry. Further action will be taken by the department on this basis.

The Municipal Corporation in Chandigarh has started the process of setting up an integrated waste processing plant with a capacity of 550 metric tons per day on 15 acres of land. It has set a time limit of two years for the project. However, after the garbage processing plant was approved in the MC House, some councilors objected to it. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit had to intervene in the matter.

ISWM is to be constructed based on design, finance, own, operate, and transfer. This work will be done by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). The technology here will produce bio-CNG and waste-derived fuel (RDF), respectively, by processing wet and dry waste. RDF will be supplied to cement plants. In June 2020, the MC took over the garbage plant from Jaypee Group, as the company failed to process the entire waste, leading to a pile of garbage. Currently, the city’s garbage is managed at a temporary facility.
