Rao Indrajit broke the record of becoming MP in Haryana: contested 11 elections, lost only 1

He contested 11 elections, lost only 1; fourth consecutive win from Gurugram, winning margin increased tension.

Haryana: The record of becoming MP for the sixth time in Haryana has been registered in the name of Rao Indrajit Singh, who won from Gurugram. Before Rao, Pandit Chiranjilal Sharma had become MP from Karnal seat for 4 consecutive times. Talking about the Gurugram seat, here also Rao Indrajit Singh was crowned MP for 4 consecutive times.

However, in these four elections, Rao Indrajit Singh’s winning margin came to the lowest level for the first time this time.

Rao Indrajit Singh is handling the politics of Rampura House. Rampura House has dominated Southern Haryana (Ahirwal) for a long time. Former Chief Minister Rao Birendra Singh had made Rao Indrajit the successor of his political legacy even before his death.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Rao Indrajit also contested 11 times from different seats of Southern Haryana. He once faced defeat from the then Mahendragarh Lok Sabha seat in 1999 during the Kargil wave from BJP candidate Sudha Yadav.

Rao Indrajit Singh, who has been MLA 4 times and MP 6 times, started his political innings in 1977 from Jatusana Vidhan Sabha (now Kosli) of Rewari district. In Jatusana, which was a traditional seat, Birendra fielded his elder son Rao Indrajit Singh as his political heir. Rao Indrajit Singh won in his very first election. After this, he reached Chandigarh as a member of Haryana Vidhan Sabha from here for four consecutive times from 1977 to 1982, 1982 to 1987 and 1987 to 1991 and then from 2000 to 2004.

He became a cabinet minister in the state government from 1986 to 1987 and 1991 to 1996. After this, Rao Birendra Singh, who was the MP from Mahendragarh Lok Sabha seat for a long time, made Rao Indrajit Singh the Lok Sabha candidate in his place in 1998. Rao won the very first Lok Sabha election, but a year later in the Lok Sabha elections held again in 1999, Rao Indrajit Singh lost to BJP candidate Sudha Yadav, in the 2004 elections, Rao Indrajit Singh took revenge of his defeat from his opponent. After this, the seat did change, but Rao Indrajit Singh’s winning streak continues.

Gurugram was again brought into existence as a Lok Sabha constituency in the delimitation held in the year 2008. After the 1971 elections, it was merged into Mahendragarh and its large part Faridabad was made a separate Lok Sabha constituency. After delimitation, elections were held in 2009 and despite the change in the constituency, Rao won. This was his third term as a Member of Parliament. After this, Rao Indrajit Singh became a minister in the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in both the terms of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and from 2014 to 2024.

Rao Indrajit Singh won one-sidedly in the last 2 Lok Sabha elections 2014 and 2019. He won by 2,74,722 votes in 2014 and 3,86,256 lakh votes in 2019, but in 2024 this margin of victory stopped at just 70 thousand 79 votes. Whereas before this in 2009, Rao Indrajit Singh had won by 84 thousand 864 votes. This time there was a close contest between Rao Indrajit Singh and Congress candidate Raj Babbar, due to which Rao’s margin of victory was the lowest.
