Chandigarh: The matter of the District Council and Block Committee elections scheduled for December 14th in Punjab has reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. An important hearing is scheduled today. Petitions have been filed by the three major parties in Punjab: the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal, and the BJP.
Everyone is demanding an extension of the nomination deadline for this election. During the nomination process, candidates from opposition parties were prevented from filing their nominations. 86 candidates won without any contest
This time, there are 12,807 candidates in the Zila Parishad elections. 1,865 people filed nominations in 23 districts of the state. During scrutiny, 140 nominations were rejected, while 1,725 nominations were found to be valid. On the other hand, a total of 12,354 nominations were filed for Panchayat Samitis. During scrutiny, 1,265 nominations were rejected, leaving 11,089 nominations pending. While 86 candidates won without any contest.
1300 booth locations declared sensitive
In Punjab, every district has a Zila Parishad, which has a total of 357 zones, with one member elected from each zone. Similarly, 15 to 25 zones are created within the state’s 154 Panchayat Samitis, totaling 2,863. One member will be elected from each zone.
The total number of voters in rural areas is 13.6 million 4 thousand. Special security arrangements will be made during nominations and elections. Police will set up special checkpoints at various locations. A total of 13,000 locations have been identified for the elections, of which 915 have been classified as highly sensitive and 3,528 as sensitive.
