Heatwave alert for Chandigarh and 8 districts of Punjab today; electricity demand at its peak

A heatwave warning has been issued for eight districts of Punjab for Monday (June 9). Dry weather conditions will prevail during this period. The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Chandigarh centre has issued a ‘yellow alert’ in this regard.

According to the Meteorological Department, heatwave conditions will affect the districts bordering Rajasthan: Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar Sahib, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, and Sangrur. Additionally, strong winds reaching speeds of 44 km/h are expected in Pathankot.

Over the past 24 hours, the state’s average maximum temperature rose by 0.9 degrees Celsius. Temperatures remain 2.3 degrees above normal. The highest temperature in the state, 44.5 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Sri Anandpur Sahib, while Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 41.0 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department states that these conditions will persist on June 10. However, a change in the weather is expected starting June 11, with a likelihood of rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in several areas.

Rising temperatures have led to an increase in electricity demand, which reached 14,203 MW on Monday. A similar situation had previously occurred on May 21, when the demand stood at 14,238 MW.

Meanwhile, to conserve electricity, the Punjab government has revised the working hours for government offices to 7:30 AM – 1:30 PM until July 15. Schools in the state are currently observing summer holidays until June 30.
