Heatwave makes life miserable in Punjab, heatwave to continue from today till June 12

Heatwave has increased once again in Punjab and Chandigarh. Heatwave started from today (June 8) and is expected to continue till June 11. Chandigarh weather has issued a yellow alert. The maximum temperature of the state increased by 2.1 degrees Celsius, which is now normal. The highest temperature was recorded in Bathinda at 44.8 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature in Chandigarh was recorded at 39.9 degrees Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, a heat wave will continue today in four districts bordering Rajasthan – Fazilka, Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda and Mansa. However, the weather will remain dry. Experts have advised people to avoid stepping out of their homes between 12 noon and 4 pm. Go out only when absolutely necessary.

As the heat continues to increase in Punjab, the demand for electricity is also increasing. During this period, Punjab generated 5,216 MW of power, while the remaining 6,603 MW was received from the Central Government. This figure is expected to increase further today. However, Powercom is not facing any power shortage.

An upper cyclonic circulation has formed over North Haryana and adjoining areas at a height of about 1.5 km above sea level. A new western disturbance is expected to become active over the Western Himalayan region from June 11. The trough at mean sea level, which was extending from Sriganganagar, Rohtak, Rewa, Ranchi and Canning to the northeast Bay of Bengal, has weakened.

The western disturbance located at 3.1 km above sea level and its associated trough over Jammu division and adjoining areas has weakened and moved northeastwards. The trough extending from Punjab and adjoining areas to the northeast Arabian Sea at 0.9 km above sea level has also weakened.

According to Surendra Pal, Director, Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, light to moderate rain is likely at a few places between June 11 and 13. The maximum temperature is expected to gradually increase by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in the next four days.
