Heatwave torments Punjab and Chandigarh: Faridkot, Ferozepur hottest at 44.3°C; Yellow Alert Issued for Heatwave

Punjab and Chandigarh are currently experiencing severe heat. The maximum temperature was recorded at 44.3 degrees in Bathinda and Faridkot, while Chandigarh recorded 41.0 degrees. Compared to Friday, the temperature has risen by 0.5 degrees. This figure stands five degrees higher than normal.

The Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for a heatwave in Punjab and Chandigarh for today. Chandigarh is likely to experience a ‘warm night’ during this period. Meanwhile, an alert for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for tomorrow, specifically from April 26 to April 30.

Today, heatwave conditions are likely to develop at isolated places, primarily across 10 districts: Moga, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Barnala, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, and Patiala. Additionally, warm night conditions are expected at a few locations in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Barnala, and Ludhiana. Furthermore, light to moderate rainfall may occur at isolated places in Fazilka, Muktsar, and Bathinda.

Temperatures Exceed 40 Degrees in Seven Districts

The impact of the heat is clearly visible across Punjab. According to official data, temperatures exceeding 40 degrees were recorded in seven districts. These include Chandigarh (City) at 41.0 degrees, Amritsar at 40.3 degrees, Ludhiana at 42.4 degrees, Patiala at 42.4 degrees, Bathinda at 42.5 degrees (44.3 degrees at the airport), Faridkot at 44.3 degrees, and Rupnagar (Bhakra Dam) at 41.3 degrees. Meanwhile, temperatures in six other districts hovered between 35 and 40 degrees. Among these, temperatures of 39.9°C were recorded in Fazilka, 39.2°C in Ferozepur, 38.4°C in Hoshiarpur, 39.6°C in SBS Nagar, 39.4°C in Moga, and 38.6°C in Pathankot. In the remaining districts, temperatures were recorded at around 35°C or lower. Specifically, Gurdaspur recorded 38.0°C, Ropar (Rupnagar headquarters) 39.0°C, Patiala (AWS) 39.9°C, and Chandigarh (Airport) hovered close to 40.0°C; temperatures in several other locations ranged between 37°C and 39°C, while no rainfall was recorded in any district.

Nighttime Temperatures Up to 26°C

There is no significant expectation of rainfall across the state throughout the week. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 38°C and 42°C, resulting in heat that feels warmer than usual. Nighttime temperatures will range between 22°C and 26°C, implying that the nights, too, will remain slightly warmer than normal. Currently, a Western Disturbance is active in the upper atmospheric winds and is positioned towards the north. Meanwhile, a mild cyclonic circulation system has also formed at an altitude of approximately 1.5 kilometers over northern Haryana and its adjoining areas, which could potentially influence the local weather conditions.
