Heavy rain alert for Punjab and Chandigarh today: Risk of lightning, Bathinda remains hottest

The monsoon has gained momentum in Punjab and Chandigarh. The Meteorological Department has issued ‘Orange’ and ‘Yellow’ alerts for rain in several districts today as well. Rainfall over the past 24 hours led to a drop of approximately 3°C in the state’s average maximum temperature. Meanwhile, Bathinda was the hottest city, recording a maximum temperature of 37°C.

According to the Meteorological Department, rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in several areas of Punjab and Chandigarh on July 29. Subsequently, a spell of light to moderate rain is expected to continue across most parts of the state from July 30 to August 3.

Data indicates a 3°C drop in Punjab’s average maximum temperature, bringing it 3.1°C below normal. The average minimum temperature also saw a decline of 0.5°C.

Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 29.6°C, which is 4.2°C below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 24.9°C, 2.2°C below normal.

Heavy Rainfall in Several Districts

Rainfall was recorded in various parts of Punjab over the last 24 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded at Sri Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar (81.5 mm) and Thein Dam in Pathankot (77.5 mm). In Chandigarh, 2.0 mm of rain fell at the airport and 1.7 mm in the city by morning.

Subsequently, between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, 58 mm of rainfall was recorded in the airport area and 45.6 mm in the city. Additionally, rainfall figures included 28.5 mm in Mohali, 20 mm in Bathinda, 27 mm at KVK Pathankot, 34 mm at Bhakra Dam, 15.2 mm at Ballowal Saunkhri, and 13.6 mm in Ludhiana. The Meteorological Department has urged people to remain alert due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall and lightning strikes. According to the department, waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas. Consequently, people are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe locations during the inclement weather.
