Heavy rain alert issued for several districts in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) Chennai has forecast heavy rain and strong winds for several districts in the state over the next few days due to a trough extending from Madhya Pradesh to Tamil Nadu.

According to the Meteorological Department, this trough is currently extending through the Gulf of Mannar region, reaching Theni, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchi, Namakkal, Erode, and the Nilgiris. Due to this, heavy rains with strong winds of up to 50 kmph are expected in many areas on Tuesday.

More impact in western and hilly districts
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain and strong winds in hilly and western districts such as the Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Coimbatore on Wednesday.

The administration has advised people to remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to landslides and waterlogging.

Thunderstorms likely in several districts
On May 7, widespread rain is expected in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, Tenkasi, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. Several districts may experience lightning and thunderstorms, accompanied by winds up to 40 kmph.

Dindigul, Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and surrounding areas are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.

Warning issued for coastal areas, fishermen advised to remain vigilant
According to the Meteorological Department, intermittent rain and cloudy skies are expected in many parts of the state until the weekend. A heavy rainfall alert has been issued for Mayiladuthurai and Pudukottai on May 8th and 9th.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to the possibility of rough weather in coastal areas. The State Disaster Response Force and district administrations have also been instructed to remain vigilant.
