High Court Hearing on FIR Against Bikram Majithia today; Government Removes SSP, Police Issue LOC

A hearing is scheduled for today at the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the FIR registered against senior Akali leader and former minister Bikram Majithia at the Majitha police station in Amritsar. Acting on a petition filed by the Akali Dal, the Court had issued notices to the DGP, the SSP (Amritsar Rural), and the SHO of the Majitha police station.

Majithia is accused of forcibly entering the Majitha police station on Sunday and forcibly freeing an accused individual, Jobanjeet Singh. He also allegedly attempted to snatch mobile phones from police personnel. Following this incident, the police registered a case and, on Monday, conducted raids at six locations across Amritsar and Chandigarh linked to Majithia and his close associates.

After failing to apprehend him, the police issued a Look-Out Circular (LOC) against Majithia late in the evening to prevent him from leaving the country. Meanwhile, in connection with this case, the government also transferred the SSP (Amritsar Rural), Sohail Qasim Mir, on Monday evening itself.

What are the allegations in the FIR registered against Majithia?
According to the police, Jobanpreet Singh—an accused named in FIR No. 90, registered at the Majitha police station on May 30 had been arrested. On May 31, a large crowd gathered outside the police station. They attempted to force their way into the station by shoving police personnel. Former MLA Bikram Majithia was also present during this incident.

The crowd, including Majithia, entered the police station. They allegedly tampered with government records and case files, and caused damage to government property. The DSP and the SHO of Majitha arrived at the station and attempted to explain that Jobanpreet had not been detained illegally, but rather in accordance with the law. Despite this explanation, attempts were made to forcibly drag the accused out of the room. There was also an attempt to snatch the SHO’s mobile phone. Subsequently, the police re-arrested the accused, Jobanpreet.
