Himachal: Relief for domestic consumers from April, electricity to get cheaper

The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board will file a revised tariff petition with the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission before the electricity rates for 2026-27 are finalized. This petition will recommend further reductions in existing domestic rates. This is expected to lead to a reduction of 5 to 7 paise per unit in domestic electricity rates in the state from April 2026. The state government is not in favor of increasing electricity rates, especially after thousands of domestic consumers voluntarily gave up their subsidies.

According to the state government, electricity subsidies will now be provided only to eligible and genuinely needy consumers. To ensure that domestic consumers are not burdened by increased costs due to the limited scope of the subsidy, the government has instructed the board to further reduce domestic electricity rates.

Following these instructions, the board has proposed a reduction in existing rates in its revised tariff petition. The government has assured that the board’s financial needs will be met.

Commission to hold public hearings in Shimla, Baddi, and Dharamshala
The State Electricity Regulatory Commission will hold public hearings in Shimla, Baddi, and Dharamshala to determine electricity rates for industrial and commercial consumers. A final decision on the rates for these categories will be made after these hearings. This is the first time the Regulatory Commission is holding public hearings in three locations across the state. The public hearings are scheduled for February 17th in Shimla, February 20th in Baddi, and February 24th in Dharamshala.
