Himachal: BJP Dominates Zila Parishads secures clear majority in eight districts, Congress leads in two

After hoisting its flag in three out of the four municipal corporations in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP has now secured a clear majority in the District Councils of eight districts as well. The ruling Congress party is ahead in two districts, while in the two major districts—Kangra and Shimla—the election of the District Council Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson will be decided by independent candidates. Out of a total of 250 District Council wards across the state, BJP-backed candidates have registered victories in 141, while Congress-backed candidates have won 59 seats.

Other candidates have triumphed in 47 seats. BJP-backed candidates secured a majority in the districts of Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Kinnaur, and Sirmaur. Congress-backed candidates maintained their dominance in the districts of Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti. The situation remains unclear in Shimla and Kangra, where independent candidates are set to play a pivotal role in determining who occupies the posts of District Council Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

BJP Had Released an Official List of Supported Candidates
Although the District Council elections were not contested under official party symbols, the BJP took a proactive stance this time by releasing a list of party-backed candidates before entering the electoral fray. The Congress party did not officially declare a list of party-backed candidates; however, party leaders in various districts were actively extending their support to individual candidates.

Between late Sunday night and Monday evening, results were declared for 247 out of the total 250 District Council seats. The results for three seats in Sirmaur district are still pending. According to the results, in Kangra—the state’s largest district—BJP-backed candidates won 24 out of the 54 seats, while the Congress secured 13 seats. Here, 17 independent candidates emerged victorious. In the Shimla District Council, BJP-backed candidates successfully won 11 seats, whereas Congress-backed candidates secured 10 seats. Four other candidates also registered wins.

The Situation in Each District
Out of the nine seats in Lahaul-Spiti, three were won by BJP-backed candidates and four by Congress-backed candidates. Independent candidates won the remaining two seats. Consequently, independent candidates are expected to play a crucial role in this district. In Chamba, Congress-backed candidates won 10 seats, while BJP-backed candidates secured 5. In Mandi, BJP-backed candidates registered a landslide victory in 25 out of the 36 seats. In Kullu, BJP-backed candidates won 9 of the 14 seats, while Congress-backed candidates won 4. In Bilaspur, BJP-backed candidates won 9 of the 14 seats, while 5 seats went to independent candidates. In Hamirpur, BJP-backed candidates achieved a decisive victory in 15 of the 19 seats. In Solan, the BJP secured 10 seats, while Congress-backed candidates won 5. In Kinnaur, BJP-backed candidates emerged victorious in 8 of the 10 seats. In Una, BJP-backed candidates won 11 of the 17 seats. In Sirmaur, results have been declared for 14 of the 17 seats, with BJP-backed candidates securing 11 of them.
